Bulletin Thought – November 4th, 2012

A Thought from Pastor Bryson,


There is a song of the church that I really love, the first portion of it says the following – When peace like a river attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well with my soul…


Obviously, life challenges having such a mindset. Just listening to the news is enough to unsettle any soul. But the key to having a mindset that says “It is well with my soul” is to be sure that our relationship with God is strong. As students of scripture surely we are mindful that Jesus taught His disciples that life would be filled with trials but they were to be of good cheer because He had overcome the world (John 16:33).


As students of scripture we encounter many individuals through the scriptures who were facing extreme challenges but yet were able to maintain a strong and confident mindset – it all went to their relationship with Jesus. They knew Him and what He was capable of doing. They were sustained by His teachings. As they were sustained by their relationship with Him and His teachings, so should it be with us.


Everyday our thoughts should include God, daily we should pray to Him, daily, we should nurture our souls through reading and studying His word. Everyday, we should remember the goodness of God so that when trials come (and they will come) we will not be overcome by the negative forces associated with them. We may become discouraged, but we’ll not stay discouraged because we know where our help comes from – the Lord.


The second portion of that song of the church I love says this – Tho’ satan should buffet, tho’ trials should come, Let this blest assurance control, That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and has shed His own blood for my soul…” With Christ as my Savior, I can truly say, “It is well with my soul” in spite of. How about you?


Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee… (Isaiah 26:3-4)
